Hi there
I had a very pleasant weekend in a caravan park near Hastings with a friend and my daughter. The weather could have been better for mid summer, but any sunshine is a plus this year and we did have a little of that! We visited a fascinating nostalgic museum in Battle, 'Yesterday's World'. And we had a nice win at holiday Bingo!! Since getting home on Monday I have been working hard to get this blog ready for you all for Saturday.

SAD NEWS FOR THOSE WITH FIBROMYALGIA - Report from Jeanne Hambleton
Professor John E. Davies from the London Guys Hospital who treated hundreds of fibromites who travelled from all over the country to see him, died on June 10th and his clinics in London, and Bristol are closed until further notice.
Many patients turned away by GPs who believed that fibromyalgia was not REAL, were diagnosed by this consultant of great renown.
Professor John Davies was Medical Director of the FM Clinics in London, Bristol and Newport, Wales. He qualified as a Medical Doctor at Guys Hospital, London, where he became a Consultant Physician.
Professor Davies had many years experience treating Fibromyalgia and ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. He was also a leading expert on Trigger Point and Botox Injections, which have been shown to be helpful for Myofascial Pain an additional condition patients with FM/CFS/ME may also have.
His son Lloyd Davies wished to pass on the family’s thanks to his father’s  patients and colleagues that have offered their condolences.
He said all are welcome at the service, adding please circulate this information to colleagues and friends.
“We would ask for Family flowers only at the church and that donations in lieu of flowers should be sent to FMA UK charity - www.fmauk.org, he said.
“The funeral will be held at 12 noon on Monday 1st July 2012 at St. Cadoc's church, Raglan, Monmouthshire, NP15 2DU. The church is in the centre of Raglan village.
A private family burial will then be held at St Peters church, Bryngwn.
Refreshments at the Beaufort Hotel, opposite St Cadoc's Church in Raglan following the service.
Locally the Beaufort have rooms. There are plenty of hotels in Abergavenny and the surrounding area”, said Professor Davies’ son.

Hands Up! A Key to the Fatigue, Sleep and Pain in Fibromyalgia Found?
By Cort Johnson on June 19, 2013

For the past decade or so research evidence has suggested that fibromyalgia is more a brain disorder than a body disorder. Studies indicating increased substance P levels, increased activity in the pain sensing and decreased activity of the pain inhibitory sections of the central nervous system suggest people with FM have a nervous system primed to produce pain. This is the central sensitization theory suggesting FM is literally a ‘top-down’ disorder that starts in messed up circuits in the brain and goes down from there.

Women with Fibromyalagia Have A Real Pathology Among Nerve Endings to Blood Vessels.
By Frank L. Rice, PhD President and Chief Scientist, Integrated Tissue Dynamics LLC

As anyone who has fibromyalgia knows, the widespread deep pain and fatigue can be very debilitating. The diagnosis can be difficult and subject to doubt because not much shows up in clinical tests. Often the diagnosis comes down to ruling out everything else. There are indications that the source of pain and fatigue is due to hypersensitivity of nerve cells within the central nervous system (called central sensitization), but why this may be occurring is unknown. Otherwise, no specific pathology has been identified that could be the source of the problem, which in itself can fuel self doubts. Distressingly, even when fibromyalgia has clearly been diagnosed, none of the FDA approved therapeutics provide predictable or sustained relief, if they provide any relief at all, and even then the side effects of drowsiness, depression and the like can be worse than the disease.
Scientists at Integrated Tissue Dynamics (Intidyn) and Albany Medical College have made a major discovery that should provide a more certain diagnosis of fibromyalgia, significant insight into the source and symptoms of the disease, and new strategies for its prevention and treatment.

Fibromyalgia Mystery Finally Solved! Researchers Find Main Source of Pain in Blood Vessels
Added by Rebecca Savastio on June 20, 2013.

Researchers have found the main source of pain in Fibromyalgia patients, and contrary to what many believe, it does not stem from the brain. The findings mark the end of a decades-old mystery about the disease, which many doctors believed was conjured in patients’ imaginations. The mystery of Fibromyalgia has left millions of sufferers searching for hope in pain medications. Up until recently, many physicians thought that the disease was “imaginary” or psychological, but scientists have now revealed that the main source of pain stems from a most unlikely place- excess blood vessels in the hand.

Do you have an overactive thyroid?

Millions of people have an overactive thyroid gland. Many don’t know it. This condition, known as hyperthyroidism, occurs more often in women than in men. Since the thyroid gland controls the body’s metabolism, an overactive thyroid puts the body into overdrive.
The symptoms of an overactive thyroid can be subtle and suggest any number of other health problems, ranging from a bowel problem to heart disease or a mental health issue.

Message from Christine Boerner
Hi Stella,
I just checked out your site, and absolutely loved the way you brought so many wonderful resources together in one place! I don't have Fibro, but I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (Myasthenia Gravis) 18 years ago, and I can't believe how much has changed in terms of the support that's available. I remember going to the library trying desperately to find a way to contact even ONE person that was going through the same thing as me, so I just love this amazing place to connect and learn!

I recently started a small business that stems from my experience with MG. I'm offering really high quality, stylish pill holders to people who need to keep their meds with them (like me!) I found that most of what was out there was focused on function and not well-designed (like the plasticky Monday, Tuesday, etc. stuff), and I really wanted something that I could carry on my keychain and be proud of. I'm just starting to work on promoting the site, and I'm wondering if there's any chance you'd be up for taking a look at it and sharing with your readers. The site is primarily focused on the US, but my hope is to expand my shipping capabilities very soon. The site is www.thepillholder.com.

Either way, I think what you're doing is wonderful, and I hope you're doing well!
Thank you so much for your time,
Chris

Social Isolation…or Hibernation?

By Purple Law Lady

I’m hibernating…yes, it’s Winter in Australia. I don’t want to leave the house (not even to step outside to get the mail) and I just want to sit quietly, alone, on my couch.
Avoiding social contact is a common pattern you might notice when falling into depression. Some people skip activities they normally enjoy and isolate themselves from the world. Others turn to alcohol or junk food to mask their pain and unhappiness. I do both.

Stupid, Bloody Pain!

From sleeping, to concentrating on a task, to simply enjoying ourselves, pain has the ability to affect us in so (too) many ways.
Our cognitive and pain problems appear to be associated with a sluggish autonomic nervous system (ANS). Despite being ‘on’ most of the time, our ANS seems to take an Ambien when faced with stress. Reduced ANS functioning during activity and increased ANS activity when resting are both associated with increased pain.  Read more. . . .

Not So Gentle Reminders by Terri Naroian

Wow!  What a whirl-wind, this morning.  It really started last night, but I think I was in such a fibro fog, it didn't phase me much.  At 9pm last night, I was asked if I could drive everyone to school, in the morning.  When I inquired as to why the bus wouldn't do, I was told that they all signed up to bring something in for a brunch they'd be making on their last day of school.  Well, that didn't exactly answer the bus question, but as I persisted in my questioning, I found out that one teen was borrowing our waffle maker, the other, a dozen eggs (good thing I had extra) and my third child agreed to bring in our extra large pancake skittle.  "Ok", I said about the ride to school, and I went off to bed.

This past week I was in DC for a policy forum held by the National Patient Advocacy Foundation. The focus of this meeting was on patient centric care. Creating The Right Diet For Fibromyalgia - How Does A Healthy Diet Help?

Maintaining a healthy diet is important for everyone, but for patients with fibromyalgia it is especially critical. Proper nutrition can help fight fatigue and improve sleep and overall health. Some patients with fibromyalgia also find eating certain types of foods, such as fried food or food high in sugar makes symptoms worse.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, patients with fibromyalgia should stick to a diet that is high in fiber and includes foods, such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Patients should also watch fat content and avoid too much animal fat.

Hurtful Comments and Chronic Pain

In a moment of frustration I (Tracy) posted this on my Facebook page dedicated to Chronic Pain, Tracy Rydzy- Oh What a Pain:
Sometimes I wonder, when something comes up that is difficult to accept or hurtful or upsetting because of living with chronic pain, do people try to be jerks about it or are they really too stupid to understand?

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources. Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only.  They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will.  Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com as you will be added to the emailing list.
I previously sent out emails as FMSSAS eNews. Past issues of FMSSAS eNews can be found at www.fms-sas.co.uk/fmseNews.html and on a blog at http://fmssas-enews.blogspot.com These ceased at the end of November 2012 when I resigned as a trustee. This blog commenced on 8th December 2012.
