Fibromyalgia and Diet
Will changing your diet help you cope with fibromyalgia?

If you have fibromyalgia, you've probably wondered if there are ways you could modify your diet to improve symptoms such as fatigue and muscle pain.
Research hasn't shown that there are specific foods that all fibromyalgia patients should avoid or add to their diets. But it may still be worthwhile to take a closer look at how foods impact the way you feel.
"There aren't many good studies that have looked at how diet can affect fibromyalgia symptoms. But I think we can gather a lot from anecdotal evidence -- from what patients tell us," says Ginevra Liptan, MD, medical director of the Frida Center for Fibromyalgia in Portland, Ore., and author of Figuring Out Fibromyalgia: Current Science and the Most Effective Treatments.
Here are some of the ways doctors say food can play a role in fibromyalgia and tips on how you can tweak your diet to support your overall health.

Living with Chronic Pain: Discovering Gratitude

It can be difficult to feel thankful when you live with chronic pain.  Because pain may interfere with important areas of life, you may have suffered some difficult losses. Over time, you may have become more resentful and less thankful.   But, if you take the time to notice, you may find that there are relationships, activities, and experiences to be grateful for, even though you have chronic pain. With practice, you can discover gratitude again and experience the many benefits of feeling thankful.

Positive Psychology

You don't have to pursue happiness. Make it come to you — starting today!
When was the last time you said, "I couldn't be happier..."? Happiness can be elusive. It can be fleeting. Too often, it can be lost in our modern world's swirl of stress, multitasking, and 24/7 news. Today you are already thinking about tomorrow.
Positive Psychology, a Special Health Report from Harvard Medical School, is a "how to" guide to greater personal happiness. It will show you how you can surmount the obstacles that disrupt and diminish your ability to enjoy life to its fullest, with awareness and connection.

20 Surprising Ways to Prevent Colds and Flu

From sleeping in to using vodka in place of hand sanitizer, check out the surprising stay-well secrets that real experts swear by.

Sniffle season strategies

You've got to act fast to fight off colds and flu. Case in point: University of Arizona scientists have found that when someone is sick in an office, it takes only four hours (!) for surfaces like coffeepot handles, copy-machine buttons and the fridge door to show traces of infectious virus. Considering that the 2012 flu season was one of the worst on record, it's well worth arming yourself against aches, cough, fever and general misery. For reality-tested tips that actually work, we turned to doctors, politicians, makeup artists and other brave souls who are exposed to viruses every day. Steal their strategies to win the war against germs this winter.

So what is this initiative you speak of?

This is INITIATIVE!!!
In its simplest form it is thinking of and planning something, you can do in the form of a physical job or task and following this through to completion.
I'm not talking about grand plans that need grand rewards. There should never need to be any kind of self boost from helping someone. This isn't something you do and then plaster all over facebook to your friends, or blog about.

Hi
This has been a great family week.  We live with one of our daughters. The other one, who lives in Somerset, came to vist us and our son joined us on Wednesday.  We had not all been together for two and a half years, so it was a happy occasion.  I didn't think I would have time for FMS eNews, but I proved myself wrong, even if it was by burning the candle at both ends!

Coping With Excessive Sleepiness
Natural Sleep Aids

Jana Barber, a teacher in San Francisco, has had insomnia off and on for 20 years. She's learned to function on just a few hours a night, but sometimes, she says, lack of sleep catches up with her. "I get really ragged sometimes," she admits. "When you haven't slept, it's tough to keep your sense of humor -- and your patience -- and you need both when you work with kids."

What are the options for people like Barber, who don't want to take prescription sleep medications but crave a good night's sleep? WebMD consulted some sleep experts about "natural" sleep aids to learn more about how -- and how well -- they really work.

Will a Gadget Help You Sleep?
Sleep apps, alarm clocks, white noise machines, sleep monitors, and more.

You can’t sleep, so you turn on the white noise machine, slip on an eye mask, and spritz some lavender spray into the air. Will you nab some shut-eye now? Maybe -- but maybe not. . . . . .

Many people look to gadgets to help them get their ZZZs, but fun as they might be, they’re no substitute for good sleep habits like going to bed at the same time every night, minimizing caffeine, and relaxing before bedtime.

Putting an Overactive Bladder to Bed - Insights for Good Sleep and Good Sex

After a long day, you’ve settled down for a comfortable night’s sleep. You’re just drifting off when suddenly you feel a warm wetness between your legs -- something you haven’t felt since you were about five years old. You’ve wet the bed.

For the approximately 16% of people over the age of 18 who have an overactive bladder (OAB), this kind of upsetting incident can become a regular occurrence. Even if they make it to the bathroom in time, they wake up so often to urinate that they aren’t getting a good night’s sleep.

Funding pressure is squeezing NHS hospitals into the arms of the private sector

Funding pressure is leading to cuts in beds and forcing NHS hospitals into the arms of the private
sector, according to recent figures. In mental health a 9% cut in the number of beds in special units is having a shocking impact upon patients. Mandy Peck, jumped to her death a day after being told that there were no beds available to ensure her safety. Other investigations by the BBC have shown how patients are being sectioned not because they need to be, but because it is the only way to get a bed. Across the NHS hospitals are now looking to the private health market for badly needed income, but at what cost to NHS patients?

Heart of the Matter

The Cholesterol Myth: Dietary Villains and Cholesterol Drug War.

Is the role of cholesterol in heart disease really one of the biggest myths in the history of medicine?
For the last four decades we’ve been told that saturated fat clogs our arteries and high cholesterol causes heart disease. It has spawned a multi-billion dollar drug and food industry of “cholesterol free” products promising to lower our cholesterol and decrease our risk of heart disease.
But what if it all isn’t true? What if it’s never been proven that saturated fat causes heart disease?
And what if the majority of patients taking cholesterol lowering drugs won’t benefit from taking these pills?
In a special two part edition of Catalyst, Dr Maryanne Demasi investigates the science behind the claims that saturated fat causes heart disease by raising cholesterol.

The Next Generation of Fibromyalgia Treatments – The Clinical Trials

With the FDA clamping down on a major class of opioid drugs used for pain relief by fibromyalgia patients, we’re taking a look at other alternatives.
We’re checking out ongoing or recruiting (or in some cases, recently completed) fibromyalgia clinical trials to see what the future may hold. There’s no telling how effective these treatments will be, but we do know some big bucks have been committed to see if these treatments work, and that says something. The trials are found in a clinical trials database run by the NIH called clinicaltrials.gov (which includes trials done outside the US, as well.)

My name is Rich Carson, and I am the Founder and CEO of ProHealth, one of the nation's leading online nutritional supplement firms since 1988. I am very passionate about all of our products that will help you live better through a healthier life.
Ongoing research continues to reinforce the multitude of health benefits of vitamin D3. It primes the immune system to fight pathogens, and also acts as an immune system modulator to help put the brakes on out-of-control immune responses. It boosts calcium & phosphorus absorption for healthy bones and teeth, promotes healthy muscle function, and much more. An important vitamin D connection that has only recently begun to be recognized and emphasized is the link between low vitamin D and chronic pain, such as experienced by those with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Pleasure and pain brain signals disrupted in fibromyalgia patients

New research indicates that a disruption of brain signals for pleasure and pain contributes to increased pain sensitivity, known as hyperalgesia, in FM patients.
Results published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology, suggest that this altered brain processing might contribute to widespread pain and lack of response to opioid therapy in such patients.

Chronic Pain Management and Activity Level: The Power of 10%

If your back hurts, or you have tension headaches, facial pain, knee pain, migraine headaches, arthritis, or one of the many other chronic pain problems, you may find it difficult to stay active, much less to exercise.  Yet, an important part of coping and living with pain is being able to remain active, despite your pain. Reduced activity can create a vicious cycle leading to deconditioning: the less you do, the weaker your muscles will become, the more likely you will find activity to be tiresome and unpleasant, so you will do even less,  the weaker your muscles will become, and so on. This deconditioning cycle can lead to an increase in pain over time.

Hello to all my readers
Another cold, frosty but sunny morning!  Very refreshing after a rather wet week.  Whatever the weather I remain at your service in the perpetual search for knowledge and information about our common enemy - fibromyalgia.  I remember once MANY years ago being told "Make friends with pain, then it won't hurt".  I thought that was mad at the time, but now I believe there may be some truth in it. 'Acceptance of'' perhaps rather than 'friends with' does create a sense of relaxation rather than the tenseness of opposition and fighting.  Embrace your pain.

What Are You Affirming to Yourself?

There have been many experiments that show that people's strength and their ability to cope with pain or discomfort are directly affected by what they are thinking about. People are constantly thinking and our bodies react to these thoughts -so in my opinion it is best to think empowering thoughts.
Affirmations are positive statements that describe a desired situation, and which are repeated many times, in order to trigger the unconscious mind into action to achieve a positive outcome.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and Spreading neuroinflammation and autoimmunity – a model for ME/CFS and fibromyalgia?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome 1 (CRPS) (previously known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or RSD) is a relatively rare but possibly under-diagnosed condition which has been recognized for some 150 years. (It was included by the eminent and influential 19th century neurologist Charcot in the ‘hysteria minor‘ group of disorders.)  Some consider CRPS and fibromyalgia as close cousins, while others seem to want to put some clear blue water between the two based on the more intense pain experienced by CRPS patients (clocking in at a whopping 42 out of 50 on the McGill Pain Scale 2). Regardless, there’s extensive symptom overlap between the two disorders 3 and, by extension, with ME/CFS.

Best and Worst Foods for Sleep

From early birds to night owls, we all can agree that when we finally lay our heads on the pillow we’d like to actually go to sleep, thank you.
Nothing is more annoying than insomnia, and the evidence is piling up that sleep is essential for good health. Although the research is a bit spotty when it comes to which foods help or harm sleep, anecdotal evidence does suggest that certain items consumed right before bedtime are more likely to be “sleep promoters” while others may be “sleep stealers,” says Russell Rosenberg, Ph.D., CEO of the National Sleep Foundation.
Here’s a list of potential good guys and bad guys when it comes to getting some shut-eye.

Message from FMA UK

Pam has received the following request from a journalist, looking to do an article on fibromyalgia.  If anyone is interested in assisting please contact Pam Stewart directly on pam.stewart@fmauk.org with a contact telephone number so Pam can have a talk with them before passing their details on.
Thanks.
Dear Pam,
I'm a freelance journalist. My mum suffered from fibromyalgia so it is something I've always been interested in. I've been commissioned by the Sunday Express's S Magazine to write a piece about the condition. They've asked me to find a case study so a woman in her 40s who suffers and would be happy to be interviewed and photographed. The interview would be conducted over the phone and would probably take about half an hour.
Please let me know if you can help. My deadline isn't urgent but would be good to get in the bag in the next few weeks.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks,

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources. Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional. I alo include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.

Hi there
It looks like we're back in business!  I've managed a "normal" eNews this week.  My eye is getting used to working solo.

WORDz for the WEEK

141.  If you haven't got the strength, desire or ability to do the right thing for the right reason, then perhaps it is better that you not do it all.
(I wonder if this should have said "then perhaps it is better that you do not do it at all".)

Two Studies requiring volunteers

1.  The Brain in Pain Study
Dr Julius Bourke Principal Investigator for The Brain in Pain Study at Barts and The London School of Medicine is conducting research into how the nerves and the brain feel and detect pain, how they respond to pain, which parts of the brain are involved and which chemicals are used by the brain to communicate between these areas.
People with fibromyalgia and healthy controls are needed.  The research involves quite lengthy appointments but I am assured that breaks can be taken as necessary.
Please read the attached information and consider taking part in this important research.  Contact Dr Bourke directly to register your interest.  This research cannot happen without your help. If you live within reasonable travelling distance of London you maylike to take part.

Full information is available at : http://goo.gl/Iq0C3J

Cranial Electrical Stimulation (CES) for Fibromyalgia by Dr Kevin White

Dr Kevin White
I recently was contacted by Linda Horncastle, an Occupational Therapist
who lives and works in the United Kingdom. She wanted to know my opinions regarding the use of cranial electrical stimulation (CES) for the treatment of fibromyalgia. My first response was wise and confident: I told her I hadn't even heard of it. But then, not wanting to come across as more of an idiot than I already seemed, I told her I would look into it and get back to her.  So here I am, getting back to her (and you) regarding my thoughts on CES, having done some reading about it.  [CES]

Pregabalin Significantly Improves Fibromyalgia Pain in Patients Who Also Suffer From Depression

Pregabalin is approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia in the United States, Japan, and other countries. But, because prior pregabalin/fibromyalgia studies excluded the use of antidepressants in treatment, information about the effectiveness and safety of pregabalin for the treatment of pain in people with fibromyalgia who are being treated with antidepressants for their depression is lacking.

Fibromyalgia solved; A pathology, not in the mind

The National Biotechnology Information Center (NBIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently released the findings of research funded by grants from Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals and Forest Laboratories that claim to have discovered a causative pathology (the science of cause and effect)  for fibromyalgia.
The cause of the disease escaped researchers for years. In fact, the condition was considered by many in the field of medicine as psychosomatic (in the mind) because of the variety of symptoms that could not be clinically pinned down and patient reporting was the primary criteria.
