Hello fellow fibro fighters
I know we are all fighting fibro but some of us are fighting other conditions and illnesses as well.  It is too easy to have tunnel vision and concentrate on just one.  Until this week I had not researched much about others of mine!  Anyway, I trust you manage to find relevant information to help you with whatever other problems you have.

A High-Tech, Low-Cost Path to Better Sleep with ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia

Experts agree that improving sleep is one of the most important elements of treating ME /CFS and Fibromyalgia. If our sleep improves, so they say, it’s likely that many of our other symptoms will improve as well.  So how do you go about improving your sleep? That’s what you’ll learn by reading this article. I will focus on new, groundbreaking ways for improving sleep that have become available in this form only recently through the invention of smartphones.

Is the Glycemic Index Diet Right for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia?

Do you get irritable and spacey if you don't eat regularly? Do you crave sugar? Do potatoes hit you like a ton of bricks sometimes?
Answering yes to any of these questions suggests you may have trouble regulating your blood sugar levels. The limited studies available, in fact, suggest blood sugar regulation may be a problem for some people with ME/CFS/FM.

Vitamin C helps eliminate chronic disease

Vitamin C experts like Drs. Steve Hickey, Hillary Roberts, Frederick Klenner, Thomas Levy plus many others have dedicated their lives to shedding light on this valuable 'forgotten therapy' for a wide range of chronic health issues. Don't expect to hear this information from your conventionally-trained physician - because they were never taught this in medical school.

If that didn't wake you up... we're not all that surprised. As it turns out, many of you were probably awake already. How did we know? Well, the sleep survey results are in! As part of our ongoing "Are You Sleeping?" initiative, 5,256 of you added your voices to the survey, making it one of the largest of its kind, and the results might surprise you.

Coping With Excessive Sleepiness, Sleep and Weight Gain
Will better sleep help you avoid extra pounds?
Could lack of sleep be causing you to gain weight?

Think about it: If you’re feeling sleepy at work, you may be tempted to reach for a cup of coffee (or several cups) and a doughnut for a quick shot of energy. Later you may skip the gym and pick up takeout on your way home to your family -- no time to cook. When you finally find yourself back in your bed, you are too wound up to sleep.  It’s a vicious cycle, and eventually this sleep deprivation can sabotage your waistline and your health.

Living with Pain: Create a Soothing Space

Stress can make chronic pain worse. Whether you suffer from headaches, arthritis, abdominal pain, temporomandibular disorder, or any other chronic pain condition you may benefit from identifying methods to reduce the stress in your life. One approach to stress management is to create a “soothing space” – a  retreat where you can calm your body, quiet your mind, focus on your strengths, and remind yourself of what matters. You need not go there frequently or stay long to recover from stress. Even five or ten minutes in the morning and evening can be very helpful.

Move over Lyrica and Cymbalta? Could Topamax (Topiramate) Be More Effective in Fibromyalgia?

The three drugs approved for fibromyalgia are a good thing, but doctors that focus entirely on them may be missing real opportunities. A case study of a fibromyalgia patient (with migraine) who responded spectacularly to a little-used drug demonstrates how important it is to stay informed, find a flexible doctor, and keep your options open.

I had an eventful day yesterday. Although the transport (which turned out to be an ambulance) was late, nothing was lost as a result. One gain was that on arrival at the hospital the road was closed with mounted police around, to make way for the marching band of Christ's Hospital followed by the whole school. Chris (my daughter) filmed it all on her mobile phone. According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ%27s_Hospital 'Links with the City and the Lord Mayor of London are maintained, with an annual parade through the City of London on St. Matthew's Day'. Today is St Matthew's day, so the feast was being anticipated to hold the procession on a school day. What timing!
The ambulance men kindly took me into the hospital by wheelchair. We were 45 minutes late but I was seen within 10 minutes for a sight test. At periodic intervals I was subjected to scans, photography, various 'scopes' to determine the problem and interviews with various people. There were no conclusive results but eye surgery was recommended. Some further tests are to be arranged. We were at St Barts for 4 hours and got home at 5pm. For the return journey I made use of the stretcher/trolley which was more comfortable than the seats!
We celebrated Laura (my granddaughter)'s 22nd birthday (which was on 19th) with a family meal in the evening, including Michael (my son) who is spending the w/e with us. Laura and Steve announced the date of their pending wedding - 1st August 2015.
All good wishes

Sleep Deprivation and Memory Loss

It is no secret that a good night's sleep makes you feel better. Not only does sleep give your body time to rest and recharge, it may also be crucial to your brain's ability to learn and remember.
During sleep, while your body rests, your brain is busy processing information from the day and forming memories. If you are sleep deprived, you are at risk of developing a number of serious health problems, such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, and your ability to learn and retain new information may be impaired.

Coping With Excessive Sleepiness

With more and more of us getting less and less sleep, it’s tempting to reach for a Red Bull or an espresso when we feel sleepy at work. But consuming caffeine to combat sleepiness can lead to a vicious cycle.
The java jolt that helps you stay awake can take up to eight hours to wear off. Caffeine can also reduce your sleep time, alter the normal stages of sleep, and decrease the quality of your sleep.
How can you stay awake naturally? Try some of these 12 jitter-free tips to take the edge off sleepiness.

I would like to thank those of you who have sent me kind messages wishing me well.  My appointment at St Bart's is at 10am next Friday.  Transport is being provided.  I hope to produce a blog for next week, but much depends on the outcome of the tests.
My best wishes to you all.
Stella

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
I previously sent out emails as FMSSAS eNews. Past issues of FMSSAS eNews can be found at www.fms-sas.co.uk/fmseNews.html  and on a blog at http://fmssas-enews.blogspot.com These ceased at the end of November 2012 when I resigned as a trustee.
This blog commenced on 8th December 2012.
