New studies Find Causes of Fibromyalgia

Two new studies on fibromyalgia focus the problem on the thyroid, pituitary and hypothalamus, and suggest new avenues of relief for sufferers.
Research from the Fibromyalgia Research Foundation reveals deficient thyroid hormone regulation (DTHR) as an underlying cause of Fibromyalgia (FM). Poor diet, poor physical fitness and metabolism slowing drugs are primary contributors to symptoms as do additional hormonal imbalances of cortisol, estrogen and progesterone.
Another study, by Dr. John Lowe, Diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management and Director of Research at the Fibromyalgia Research Foundation in the UK claims “indisputable proof” that the primary cause of fibromyalgia (FM) are with the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus.

Greetings to all
Only four days until Christmas.  I have tried to keep information to a minimum this week as I did not want to overwhelm you at this busy time of the year.  If you do happen to have some spare time you can catch up on previous week's items that you may have missed.  Today's WORDz are particularly appropriate, but purely by co-incidence.

Benefit Sanctions - Independent Inquiry

Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions

Due to the draconian policies of this government in its Social Security reforms and the clear pressure placed on DWP/Job Centre staff, the number of claimants being subjected to benefit sanctions has increased by hundreds of thousands per year.
Benefit sanctions can last from 4 weeks to 3 years causing immense distress to benefit claimants, suicide, homelessness, poverty, hunger and increased use of food banks.

Men With Fibromyalgia

If you are a man suffering from fibromyalgia, you may be having trouble dealing with your illness. This is because fibromyalgia syndrome is typically thought of as a woman's disease, and men with the illness are often overlooked. Men sometimes don't receive the same fibromyalgia treatment or emotional support that women do, and many men may even have trouble getting diagnosed properly. If you are a man dealing with the rigors of fibromyalgia,it is important know that you are not alone.

Big Antiviral Trial Could Usher in New Treatment Era for Fibromyalgia - A New Approach to Fibromyalgia

So it’s going to be
 Fibromyalgia that
 gets the really
 big antiviral trial
Infections are a common trigger for fibromyalgia (FM), and fibromyalgia patients are experience many ‘sickness behavior’ symptoms, but we haven’t usually associated FM with viruses or immune system problems.
That’s been changing  recently. A immune biomarker has been proposed. Small fiber neuropathy - possibly caused by immune dysregulation – has been found. Dr. Dantini has been treating FM with antivirals for years.  The immune system’s starting to get some respect in FM.

Best and Worst Ways to Cope With Stress

Jangled nerves got you down? There are right ways and wrong ways to get your stress under control.
Stress-busting solutions by Lauren A. Greene

From natural disasters to overly demanding bosses, our world is filled with stressors. While some research has shown that short bursts of stress can be good for you, a new study out of Ohio State University and published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that dealing with persistent, long-term stress (like that from a toxic boss or from caring for an elderly parent) can actually change your genes, leading to an increase in inflammation that can bring on a variety of health issues.
Learning how to cope properly can go a long way for your everyday health. Here, the best and worst ways to de-stress right now.

Neuropathology in Skin May Be Source of Fibromyalgia

Biopsies of the palms of fibromyalgia patients have revealed an anatomic distinction that may explain the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Researchers have found an excess of sensory fibers innervating arteriole-venule shunts (AVS), structures involved in temperature regulation, in fibromyalgia patients.

“We’re asking about sensory innervation to vasculature: Could it underlie the pain, fatigue, poor sleep and cognitive issues characteristic of fibromyalgia?”

Top five holiday foods that promote cancer, diabetes, heart disease and premature death

The holiday food rush is on across the USA, and for the next month, Americans will be stuffing thei

The conventional media will give you all sorts of stories about which holiday foods are "high calorie" or have too many grams of fat, but it seems no one in the mainstream media is willing to tell you the rest of the story: How to avoid the cancer-causing chemicals, toxic heavy metals, GMOs and artificial ingredients found in holiday foods.

Fight Fibromyalgia Symptoms With A Healthy Diet

Symptoms vary between patients and mimic those of other conditions, making diagnosis especially difficult. In addition, there is no one specific treatment used for the 5 million Americans with fibromyalgia, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Instead, patients may benefit from a combination of education, exercise, medication and lifestyle changes. Creating an awareness of nutrition and healthy living can also help manage the condition, and several dietary guidelines may be especially helpful, say the experts.

Here is an opportunity to get published on the matter, but time is short.
FMA UK has sent this message:-
We have received the following request from Matt Barbour, The Sun.  Please distribute around your group members. (I'm reaching beyond my group members by including it here.  S.)
"Hi,
I’m looking for any families whose Christmas might be affected in some rather extreme way by some health condition or illness – for instance, autism, extreme allergies, through to any other health conditions. We’re open to suggestions. We want to provide an insight into how some families’ Christmases aren’t all turkey and presents, with rather large obstacles to contend with. We can plug any charity, provide copy control for the family and pay a fee.
Please contact: matbarbour@googlemail.com and copy in head.office@fmauk.org if you are interested
Request deadline: 11 December 2013 - 17.00
Please get back to me asap if you can help.
Thanks,

Herbs and Supplements for Fibromyalgia

Managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia or related ailments is not easy. So, many patients turn to alternative therapies for relief of pain and sleep problems. They may use Chinese herbs or over-the-counter supplements such as 5-HTP, melatonin, and SAM-e.

Because so many people -- not just those with fibromyalgia -- are using alternative therapies, Congress has formed the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). It is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and it helps appraise alternative treatments, including supplements, and define their effectiveness. This organization is now creating safe guidelines to help people choose appropriate alternative therapies that may help their symptoms without making them ill.

Exciting news for Islanders with Fibromyalgia as research project gets underway

A  brand new neuroscience research project is about to get underway on the Isle of Wight that will focus its attention on the debilitating chronic pain condition, Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS).

The Island’s Radiology and Chronic Pain departments will be linking with neuroscience colleagues at both Imperial College and University of Southampton to explore new techniques to help them better understand the condition.

Good news: ‘fibrofog’ doesn’t portend Alzheimer’s

‘Fibrofog’ – the cognitive dysfunction experienced by up to 80% of fibromyalgia patients – is not an early harbinger of Alzheimer’s disease, Dr. Robert S. Katz asserted at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology.

The problems with memory, concentration, language, and thinking, collectively known as fibrofog, affect fibromyalgia patients in their 20s-50s. The onset is typically more sudden and dramatic than with classic forms of dementia. As fibrofog becomes chronic, many affected fibromyalgia patients – fearing the worst – worry they are on a road to Alzheimer’s disease in middle age.
Not so, according to Dr. Katz, professor of medicine at Rush Medical College, Chicago.

Brain imaging reveals how chronic pain drug works

New research from the University of Michigan has explored the use of brain imaging in order to track the clinical action of a drug used to treat chronic pain. This is according to a study published in the journal Anesthesiology.

Using three different brain imaging procedures, the investigators were able to track the actions of pregabalin - a drug commonly used to treat patients suffering from fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain.

Tai-Chi's Effectiveness for Decreasing Fibromyalgia Pain

Tai-Chi has shown benefits in physical and psychological outcomes in diverse populations. We aimed to determine the changes elicited by a Tai-Chi program (12 and 24 weeks) in acute pain (before vs. after session) in fibromyalgia patients. We also assessed the cumulative changes in pain brought about by a Tai-Chi program.

They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will.
