Before I begin this week’s enewsletter, a quick reminder that this weekend marks the beginning of British Summer Time. So remember to move your clocks forward an hour on Saturday night.
If you are going to be at the fibromyalgia conference in Chichester this weekend please make yourself known to me.  I believe we will all be wearing lanyards with identification badges. Also, Sunday is Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday to give it it's traditional name.  I hope that all of you who are mothers have a happy day with or without your families!

Enzymes - by Norah Wickerson

Norah Wickerson
Enzymes are vital to life. They are composed of amino acids, hence made of protein and they act to lower the amount of energy every reaction needs by greatly accelerating it.
Over 3,000 bodily reactions totally depend on these biological catalysts from digestion, circulation, breathing, thinking and every chemical reaction happening in our body.
This is known as Metabolism - and there are 2 types of metabolism.

9 Things You Can Do to Avoid Fibromyalgia Pain and Fatigue

1. I'm having a hard time getting things done. What can I do?
Because you have good days and bad days with fibromyalgia, start each morning assessing how you feel. If you didn't sleep well the night before, plan your day accordingly and arrange to do less. If you feel well rested and your pain is tolerable, do more -- but remember that moderation is key. Always be flexible. You never know when you'll have a flare, so listen to your body and take breaks when you need them.

Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia Syndromes - Strategies for Healing

Every person with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and/or fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) has a unique presentation of these conditions with various complications and sets of symptoms. There is no one treatment that can “cure” these syndromes or that is helpful to everyone however a combined approach of therapies can lead to an improved quality of life. Listed below are strategies and therapies that have been beneficial for others and myself.

There are 24 aspects of healing outlined here:

HOPE

I occasionally receive negative comments on my blog from persons with CFS and FMS. This happens most often when I attempt to connect with others in on line support groups. I understand that this is part of presenting material on the Internet but nevertheless it is disturbing. The fact is there are many people with CFS and FMS that are resistant to hearing about avenues of healing that they are not familiar with and suspicious about stories of recovery. Some cannot understand the complexities of the topics I write about and want a simple explanation for their condition. Some have even questioned my motives for writing about the treatments that have helped me and the validity of my experience. This is sad indeed yet I try to not take it personally. I know that these responses stem from fear and suffering that is part of the CFS and FMS experience.

Pridgen Reports Fibromyalgia Antiviral Trial Results “Very Positive” : Predicts New Approach Will Be “Game-Changer”

With 90% of the data from their big Fibromyalgia antiviral study in, Dr. William “Skip” Pridgen reported in the Tuscaloosa News  that the results were ‘very positive’. Pridgen enthusiastically stated, “We feel we are on the right track and feel this is a real game changer,” and not just for Fibromyalgia. Dr. Pridgen reported ‘very positive’ results with 90% of the data from the trial in. “It is a tip of the iceberg. What we are discovering will accomplish so much more,” Pridgen reported, which surely means he believes his approach will work, perhaps in a modified manner, in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and similar disorders. Pridgen’s antiviral trial began last year.  It involves not one but two antivirals, one of which is believed to have a strong anti-inflammatory component.  His is the first antiviral trial to occur in FM.

Once  a month we will ask the community for  questions (make them tough ones!) regarding a personal health issue they would like answered. I or the community will pick the Question of the Month and then we’ll give it to our ten person ME/CFS expert physician panel to cchew on. Each practitioner will be working alone, and will be given the opportunity to ask further questions of the patient. They’ll be given about two weeks to respond. The answers will be posted on a blog (sans the questioners name and email address) once a month.

If you are one of my FaceBook Friends you may have been asked to send me some 'lives'. I have to confess that I have spent some time recently playing Facebook games concerning animals, fish, jewels, candy, vegetables, fruit, balls, bubbles etc.  When credit is used up the games urge you to ask Friends for help.  I have tried NOT to do this but sometimes it is unavoidable. Life's a bit like that.  We try not to ask for help if we can possibly manage by ourselves, when, for all we know, there are people only too happy to lend a hand. Actually I've found these games to be quite theraputic, so not to be lightly dismissed!

One size does not fit all

80% of us sleep on more than one pillow instinctively trying to achieve alignment and comfort and so better sleep. Ideally we should sleep on one pillow that is the correct height for us and keeps us aligned throughout the night. When this pillow needs replacing we should be able to confidently buy the right pillow again. Until now this has not been possible but that has changed..............

How can the Alpha-Stim help Fibromyalgia?  - Linda Horncastle

Linda Horncastle
Alpha-Stim is a gentle, non-invasive treatment. Unlike some drugs, it leaves the mind alert. It uses tiny microcurrents, close to the level of electricity that naturally occurs in the body. The microcurrents produce residual and cumulative results that encourage the body’s systems to work better, such as improving circulation and helping the cells function. It helps to promote Alpha waves which lead to calm and alert feelings and these reduce the over-active ‘fight and flight response’ that increases pain and prevents restful sleep in fibromyalgia.

Psychological side-effects of anti-depressants worse than thought

A University of Liverpool researcher has shown that thoughts of suicide, sexual difficulties and emotional numbness as a result of anti-depressants may be more widespread than previously thought.

In a survey of 1,829 people who had been prescribed anti-depressants, the researchers found large numbers of people – over half in some cases – reporting on psychological problems due to their medication, which has led to growing concerns about the scale of the problem of over-prescription of these drugs.

Big Antiviral Trial Could Usher in New Treatment Era for Fibromyalgia

A New Approach to Fibromyalgia

Infections are a common trigger for fibromyalgia (FM), and fibromyalgia patients are experience many ‘sickness behavior’ symptoms, but we haven’t usually associated FM with viruses or immune system problems.
That’s been changing  recently. A immune biomarker has been proposed. Small fiber neuropathy - possibly caused by immune dysregulation – has been found. Dr. Dantini has been treating FM with antivirals for years.  The immune system’s starting to get some respect in FM.

Researchers Identify Brain Differences Linked to Insomnia

Increased brain plasticity in motor cortex distinguishes poor sleepers from good ones.

Johns Hopkins researchers report that people with chronic insomnia show more plasticity and activity than good sleepers in the part of the brain that controls movement.
"Insomnia is not a nighttime disorder," says study leader Rachel E. Salas, M.D., an assistant professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "It's a 24-hour brain condition, like a light switch that is always on. Our research adds information about differences in the brain associated with it."

This is very likely to get worse over time. The Best Mattress for a Better Night's Sleep

Buying a new mattress? Here are tips for finding the right mattress for you.

You spend about a third of every day in bed. Whether that time is spent blissfully slumbering -- or tossing and turning -- depends a lot on your mattress.
"A mattress can impact a person's sleep," says Michael Decker, PhD, RN, associate professor at Georgia State University and spokesman for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
One way that your mattress affects your sleep has to do with the network of fine blood vessels, called capillaries, that runs underneath your skin.

Yoga on the Path to Wellness

We each have our own measure of physical and/or emotional pain. Yoga is a highly effective pathway towards healing that pain.

When undertaken with full intent and determination, and with proper guidance, yoga enables us to:
Not only withstand the emotional as well as physical challenges of our lives, but go beyond them to a state of equanimity.
Improve our body's physical condition for optimum performance healing itself as circumstances require.
Develop a steady, calm and powerful mind as well as a clear "sense of self".
The perception of yoga as just an alternative form of exercise only resides in those who have yet to practice under proper guidance. Give yourself the gift of a true path towards wellness of body, mind and spirit. As little as 15 minutes a day can make a real difference.

How many children have you known who have been given a biscuit or sweets to make them feel better after a fall of other upsetting incident? Is that how you were comforted as a child?

HOSPITAL CLOSURE CLAUSE: WHAT DO YOU THINK?
MARCH 11TH, 2014 BY BECKY JARVIS

Becky Jarvis
Late this afternoon, MPs debated the Hospital Closure Clause. Since then, the office team has been trying to work out what to make of how it went. It’s quite complicated, and there’s still quite a lot of analysis to be done.
Here’s some questions 38 Degrees members will need to consider together over the next few days:

Find them here->  http://blog.38degrees.org.uk/2014/03/11/hospital-closure-clause-what-do-you-think/

Living With Pain: Chronic Pain Acceptance

You may have heard the term “chronic pain acceptance”.  At first, it may sound a little sad – as though you are being asked to simply give up. But that is not what is meant by the term. It has more to do with moving on from the struggle, the fight, and frustration of trying to get rid of or cure your pain… to living your life, even though you have pain.

Moving Beyond Anticipatory Pain for Effective Chronic Pain Management By: Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead

If you’re living with a chronic pain condition you may have noticed that sometimes you are so fearful about doing even the most basic tasks of daily living, that you become immobilized. It can also manifest as overwhelming anxiety, so much so, that a phenomenon gets triggered which amplifies your perception of pain. I call this Anticipatory Pain.

ME/CFS Yahoo Group

Brighton Hove ME link is an independent online space purely for members to link up with other ME/CFS sufferers living in the local area.

You are welcome to use this space for chit chat, sharing experiences or posting about things that interest you.
People often use the space differently. Some link up online. Others prefer to exchange phone contact or meet up in person.
If you want to join us for a cuppa we have regular monthly social meet ups.
If members choose to take on a role that is helpful to this group (as many do) other members are not indebted to this.
It's always great to have new people join. Lots of us find living with ME/CFS can be a very isolating experience and just knowing others in the same boat can be helpful.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources. Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
