WORDz for the WEEK

174.  We do not just see ourselves in others but sometimes we also see the others in ourselves.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
.

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Getting lots of negative test results is a standard part of having these illnesses, but that doesn't make it any easier to hear.
What's worse, people close to us sometimes echo those words -- "there's nothing wrong with you." A look at the impact that can
have, below.
Also this week, something you may have wondered about in response to a heavily covered 9-1-1 call related to a cat, and the eventual well-publicized diagnosis of something that sounds a lot like fibromyalgia.
Since the recent change that meant you couldn't comment at the end of an article, I've been inviting you into the forum so we don't miss out on the amazing conversations that have gone on here for years. What I'm seeing is that a lot of you are looking, but few are commenting. Down in the third spot this week, I've included a link to the forum so you can look around and get familiar with it. I know change is hard, but I don't want us all to lose those opportunities to share information or just plain vent. I hope you'll come have a look around!
Down in Featured Articles, you'll find some information on drugs and supplements.
Take care of yourself!

5 Causes of Insomnia You May Not Be Aware Of

Did you get enough sleep last night? If you answered no, you are not alone. For those of us who do not get enough  rest, the obvious solution is to go to bed earlier each night. For others, however, it is not that simple. Insomnia affects approximately 70 million individuals in the U.S. alone and can last a night or two, or, in chronic cases, for months or years.

Daily Health eAlert - Know The Dangers Of Lyrica For Fibromyalgia

Lies and deceit
As is the case with many of Big Pharma's side effect ridden drugs, it turns out fibromyalgia sufferers will be better off without the help of Lyrica — the fibromyalgia drug manufactured by Pfizer. That's because it comes with a list of hair-raising side effects, like "suicidal thoughts or actions".
And if someone in your family has fibromyalgia, you'd probably want to forward this alert to them straight away, because this drug may do far more harm than good.

A personal note from Vicky

It has been a long old haul and we’re not there yet but we’re moving back into the kitchen.  The windows and worktop are yet to come at the time of writing.
This last week has seen me out and about around the gyms in town covering classes for fellow Pilates teachers.  There are not that many of us in the area trained in Pilates to the advanced instructor level that the industry now demands.  So it’s good to help each other out.  This past week I’ve helped out at Bewbush and K2 Leisure Centres and Nuffield Heath and Fitness and the natives have been more than friendly! I used to teach at most of the major gyms so it’s good to see some familiar faces. . . . .

Networking ‘Vitality’: The Teitelbaum Effort To Train 1,000 Fibromyalgia and ME/CFS Practitioners

1,000 new Fibromyalgia
and ME/CFS practitioners
 – what do you think?
The last blog on Dr. Teitelbaum showed that some people love him and others really, really don’t.  He’s a different breed from the Klimas’s, the Lapp’s,  the Bateman’s and the other ME/CFS experts  many of us are  most familiar with. He doesn’t do CFSAC and doesn’t seem to have participated in the IACFS/ME; instead he writes books and gets on mainstream  media. His book “From Fatigued to Fantastic”  sounds like  fluff  but is a very comprehensive treatment guide to ME/CFS and  FM treatment.  He has very high fees but he also provides a free electronic survey that can help you pinpoint possible issues (and use his supplements to fix them).  He’s an interesting blend of physician and marketer.

Turning Stress into Pain: A Fibromyalgia Primer by Dr. Martinez-Lavin Pt I – Pain
Dr. Martinez-Lavin

A Mexico City doctor and researcher, Dr. Manuel Martinez-Lavin, has been studying and treating people with Fibromyalgia for over thirty years. In a 2009 paper he proposed two pathways for Fibromyalgia. Dr. Martinez-Lavin has been treating people with Fibromyalgia for over thirty years One suggested that over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system fibers (sprouting) left nerve cell bodies called the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) in a hyperexcitable state. The last way stations for sensory input from the body before it reaches the spinal cord, Martinez-Lavin believes these nerve bodies are overloading the spinal cord with pain signals. He also proposed that increased activity of the sodium channels that transmit pain signals in the DRG could be present.

What is Migratory Arthritis?

pain in the grainThis condition  falls under the auspice of autoimmune arthritis.  Patients who experience migrating arthritis typically have joint pain and stiffness that moves around from joint to joint.  Unlike other forms of arthritis that typically stay in one place.  The symptoms can flare up periodically (come and go), and they can migrate to different locations throughout the body – hence the term migratory.

Juvenile fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep and mood issues.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.
Fibromyalgia is commonly thought of as a condition that affects adults. However, fibromyalgia also occurs in children and adolescents. Estimates suggest that juvenile-onset fibromyalgia affects 2 to 6 percent of school children, mostly adolescent girls. It is most commonly diagnosed between ages 13 and 15.

Hypnosis, also referred to as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, is a trance-like state in which you have heightened focus and concentration. Hypnosis is usually done with the help of a therapist using verbal repetition and mental images. When you're under hypnosis, you usually feel calm and relaxed, and are more open to suggestions.

How Childhood Trauma Affects Adult Health

Do the aftereffects of traumatic events we suffered as children follow us into adulthood in a physical way? Research about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) proves that enormous childhood stress absolutely leads to increased potential for adult illness and disease. The original Adverse Childhood Experience study (conducted from 1995 to 1997) examined the link between childhood trauma and the likelihood of developing medical conditions as an adult. A collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Kaiser Permanente’s Health Appraisal Clinic in San Diego, the study canvassed 17,000 Health Maintenance Organization patients willing to offer extensive information about childhood experiences of neglect, family dysfunction, and abuse. More than half the study respondents reported at least one category of childhood trauma, and a quarter of them reported more than two.

The summer solstice is set to take place this weekend, marking the first day of the summer season in the northern hemisphere with the longest hours of daylight.
On Saturday 21 June, the annual solstice occurs when the sun's zenith is at its furthest point from the equator. At this time, the sun reaches its northernmost point while the Earth's North Pole tilts directly towards the sun, at about 23.5 degrees.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis don’t get paired in studies very often, and that’s a shame.  Both are neuro-immune disorders and both are associated with enormous fatigue.  The authors of this study suggested MS could provide something of a guide to research possibilities in ME/CFS, and after this study it’s hard to see how it could not.

How doctors are failing to spot the brain injury that could be behind 30,000 cases of 'chronic fatigue'

  • Patients misdiagnosed with CFS when they have brain damage
  • Post-traumatic hypopituitarism (PTHP) is often caused by head injury
  • Symptoms include depression, obesity, fatigue and chronic pain

Thousands of British patients suffering  from chronic pain and fatigue could be misdiagnosed with psychological problems when they unknowingly have a type of brain damage.
Those people who complain of the symptoms are not given a series  of blood tests that can pinpoint the problem, meaning the true cause  is not spotted. Patients are then condemned to years of misery and ineffective therapies.
The major cause of the damage is head injury, which can be relatively mild. However, viruses, tumours and even animal bites can be a trigger.

Vibration exercise study finds some relief for fibromyalgia

Summary:
Whole-body vibration exercise may reduce pain symptoms and improve aspects of quality of life in individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia, research shows. Whole-body vibration exercise involves standing, sitting or lying on a machine with a vibrating platform that causes muscles to contract and relax as the machine vibrates. The machines primarily are used by researchers but have begun appearing in fitness centers and are sold commercially.

Take-home Message for Physicians Treating Comorbid Fibromyalgia, Depression with Pregabalin

Lesley Arnold
Lesley Arnold, MD, explains the benefits of pregabalin used in comorbid fibromyalgia and depression at the American Pain Society 33rd Annual Scientific Meeting, held April 30, 2014, to May 3, 2014, in Tampa, FL. The study focused on patients who were receiving a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) for their depression in combination with fibromyalgia symptoms. "We also showed that pregabalin improved pain in this group no matter what class of antidepressants they were on, whether it was SSRIs or SNRIs,” Arnold says. Secondary outcomes were also analyzed in the study. The patients’ reports of mo od, anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and global function improved after the introduction of pr pression-with-Pregabalin.

My Guide: Overcome Insomnia by Rebecca Richmond

Insomnia affects an estimated 30–50% of the population in the world and in some cultures it is believed to be even higher!
We spend about one third of our lives asleep and it is essential for survival. During sleep, the body takes the opportunity to cleanse and regenerate, actively producing hormones required for growth, recovery and healing of muscles and tissues.

Did you know that it is full moon tomorrow - Friday 13th - (hope you are not supersticious).  This is a rare event.  The next time a full moon will fall on Friday 13th will be 2049!  I don't think I'll still be around then!  But some of you might be.
Best wishes to you all

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
