Autumn has begun.  There is a definite chill in the air, leaves are beginning to fall and morning mists persist.

At this time of year I am reminded of "To Autumn" a poem by English Romantic poet John Keats (31 October 1795 – 23 February 1821). The work was composed on 19 September 1819 and published in 1820 in a volume of Keats's poetry that included Lamia and The Eve of St. Agnes

And 2014 is three quarters gone!

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

When you're making decisions about treating fibromyalgia, it can be hard to know which drug is most likely to work for you.
See what we know about the differences between the four most common medications, below.
Also this week, I've included a lot of information on treatments.
Take care of yourself!

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) – A Medical Food for Fibromyalgia and (ME/CFS)?
Pain Reliever, Anti-inflammatory, Microglial Inhibitor
“However, a great body of evidence exists for PEA, comprising at least 40 clinical trials in around 6,000 subjects.  This body of evidence shows a positive risk/benefit ratio for PEA, warranting much wider use of this compound by the medical community” Hesselink

PalmitoylethanolamideFirst isolated from soybean lecithin, egg yolk and peanut meal in 1954, palmitoylethanolamide or PEA is a naturally occurring substance produced in our body, apparently in response to inflammation.  A fatty acide amide and nuclear factor, PEA binds to receptors in the nucleus, affecting processes involved in inflammation and chronic pain. PEA is not well known in the U.S., but it’s well-studied with over 350 references in PubMed dating back more than fifty years.

“Gimme Some Loving”: Mindfulness in the Midst of Illness – The Last Best Cure #6

About ten years after being struck by an autoimmune disorder, science journalist Donna Jackson Nakazawa realized that, while traditional approaches (drugs) had kept her alive, hers was nevertheless a rather joyless, difficult existence.  Recent studies suggested that mindfulness practices might be helpful in several ways, so she turned to them not just to bring back the joy in her life but hopefully to improve her health as well.

What is Fibromyalgia?

The sensation of pain is an essential part of human experience. Pain functions as a primary method for protection woman-neck-pain from and avoidance of harmful factors. When one feels pain, the body responds physically and emotionally. Physically, pain sensations travel from the source, through peripheral nerves and into the central nervous system (CNS). Once it reaches the brain, the body responds with a reflex, or involuntary response away from the source, and commits the incident to memory. Emotionally, feelings such as discomfort, fear or aversion are associated with the brain’s reflex mechanis ms and contribute to an awareness of pain. Together, these processes are expected to end the offending pain, allow  for healing time and prevent further discomfort.
Chronic pain becomes a problem when the interrelationship between the physical and emotional responses doesn’t function properly.

24 September 2014 newsletter

It’s hard to know which of the numbers in this newsletter is the most appalling.
The fact that 31% of disability living allowance (DLA) claimants get absolutely nothing when they transfer to personal independence payment (PIP).
Or that just 45% of new PIP claims are successful, if you don’t include people with terminal illnesses.
There’s the staggering 92% drop in employment and support allowance (ESA) appeals since the DWP brought in mandatory reconsiderations.
Then there’s the revelation that the PIP waiting list is still getting longer, in spite of promises by ministers to fix it.
There are now 323,000 people waiting for a medical, meaning an average wait of at least 35 weeks.
Or is it that just 19% of claimants who made a new ESA claim between October and December 2013 have so far had a decision, again largely because of long delays in getting a medical?

A personal  note from Vicky

We have had a great week at a Mark Warner resort in Sardinia.  It was my first holiday with them and I would definitely go again.  I can’t say it was restful as I took part in exercise classes, did sailing, kayaking, beach volleyball, tennis and some really tough bike rides and a bit of Zumba.  I won the female press up challenge to the music Flower by Moby - perhaps that’s something to play with in class this week or we could do it for squats…  We met some lovely people and ate and drank too  much.

You've probably tried melatonin to help you sleep, but did you know it can be a pain reliever as well? See what a study shows about what it may be able to do for us, below.
Also this week, a new profile of amitriptyline, plus a look at some supplements that may be able to help you.
Several people have mentioned that they miss the old commenting system, and believe me, I'm right there with you! Hang in there with me, though - the powers that be are looking for a better way for you to be able to have your voice heard here. For now the forum works fine (especially when I remember to set up and link the threads, which I apparently didn't do last week. Sorry about that! The one I messed up on is included below as well.)

Supplements for Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Matching Symptoms With Supplements

Many doctors, researchers and people with fibromyalgia (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS or ME/CFS) say nutritional supplements are an important part of managing your symptoms. Many of us swear by them, and some people use supplements as an alternative to medications.
However, supplements are typically not well researched, and many health-care workers believe them to have little benefit. Some of the supplements listed below have gone through double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trials and have had mixed results, while others haven't been scientifically tested, either for these conditions or at all. We have very little solid evidence that supplements do help alleviate symptoms of FMS or ME/CFS. Self-reported results are highly mixed as well, with different supplements working for different people.

Big Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Grant Explores Why Men Get ME/CFS

Dr. Mary Fletcher and the ME/CFS research team at the Institute for Neuroimmune Medicine at Nova Southeastern University have received a very large grant ($1.9 million) from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the NIH. This grant will look for biomarkers in, get this, men with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The grant builds on the work
provided by $10 million (that’s right, ten million dollars) worth of work on Gulf War Syndrome – a syndrome populated mostly by men. It may be first study devoted to specifically understanding this disease in men.
It’s about time! The NSU research group has been focused mainly on women, and this big grant will balance that out.  ME/CFS is often spoken of as a “woman’s disorder”, but men make up twenty to forty percent of the million people in the U.S. believed to have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. (The press release, interestingly, suggests that this figure is too low.  One wonders who they feel the epidemiological studies missed

How Zinc Helps Clear Fibro Fog

Everyone knows Zinc is a widely used remedy for fighting the common cold – but not much is said about its many other benefits and uses.  Recent research has shed new light on its other benefits as well as the risks of deficiency.  According to some estimates, as much as 12% of the U.S. population is at risk of deficiency.  Deficiency can result in a weakened immune system, depression, cognitive impairment, loss of appetite and more.
For fibromyalgia sufferers, getting enough zinc can be critical to helping reduce some of their systems as well as protecting their overall health from disease and infection.  So how exactly does Zinc help fibromyalgia sufferers?  Here are 4 ways it helps:

I have recently experienced what I call 'episodes' (four so far) which occured at irregular intervals.  They were comprised of extensive cold clammy sweating, churning stomach, nausea and itching hands.  My doctors are mystified and undertaking extensive tests.  I am wondering whether this is fibro related, in which case, nothing will be identified from the tests!  Has anyone else reading this had a similar combination of symptoms?  They are very debilitating and make me reluctant to go anywhere on my own, and just when I was regaining confidence in driving again!
Please let me know if you can throw any light on this.
Thanks
Best regards

Fatigue & Fibro Fog: Could You Have a B-12 Deficiency?

A feeling of being tired all the time. Problems with memory and concentration. Trouble sleeping. Diarrhea and/or constipation. These can all be important signs of the body’s need for more vitamin B-12.
Vitamin B-12 (cobalamin) is an essential nutrient, meaning it is required for normal body functioning but cannot be produced by the body.
Therefore, it is necessary to obtain the B-12 our bodies need through the food we eat and/or dietary supplements.

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles
Manufactured by Automotive Group

The Automotive Group was established over thirty eight years ago and since its inception have been involved with the design and adaptation of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles. After extensive research, development and consultation our latest range of ultra-modern Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles makes transportation of wheelchair users a pleasure.

We also pride ourselves for the technology and comfort built into our design; so much so that we have included T and C within our company logo which depicts a Segedunum Domus the Latin word meaning "Strong Fort". The Romans used it many years ago as a name for their fort, the remains of which are still situated adjacent to our premises on the banks of the river Tyne Newcastle upon Tyne. As in Roman days we believe in the strength of technology, design and comfort being built into our product for the benefit and enjoyment of our customers.

What an inspiration the Invictus Games have been. How to triumph over adversity, and excel. I am duly impressed. Congratulations to Prince Harry and his initiative.  Congratulations and best wishes  too to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as they prepare for their second baby.

Fondest wishes to you all
Stella

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
