I had hoped to show you my new bathroom this week, but alas, there have been further hitches and it is still not finished.  However, my birthday was more pleasing.  Thank you to many of you who sent birthday wishes via Facebook, with ecards and even actual cards!  I tried to acknowledge them all, but apologies if I missed any.  I had a wonderful day with coffee and cake with friends at church in the morning and a family meal in the evening organised by my wonderful daughter Christine, themed on knitting with everything colour co-ordinated.  See the balls of icing 'wool' and knitting needles on the cake and the floral table centre which she had knitted.

Multi-Supplement Formulas; Nerve Stimulation

It's hard not to come across them -- proprietary supplement formulas claimed to "cure" or "reverse" fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, or make miraculous improvements to your health in general. They can sound really appealing, but are they the way to go? See what you should consider when making that decision.
Also this week, a headache treatment is tested for fibromyalgia, and lots of information on supplements and alternative treatments.

Lifestyle Management With a Chronic Illness by Harper Spero for HEALTH PERCH (with parenthesis by me - Purple Law Lady!)

During the first ten years of my life, my mom was on a mission to figure out why I had chronic ear infections, eczema, abscesses, and ongoing dental issues. Finally, when I was 11, I was diagnosed with Hyper-IgE, a chronic illness.
The National Institute of Health defines a chronic illness as a long-term health condition that does not have a cure. Some examples of chronic illnesses are epilepsy, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cystic fibrosis, Crohn’s disease, and arthritis. (and Fibromyalgia, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and other related illnesses).

The Future Fibromyalgia Drugs? Pharmaceutical Source Predicts Four Drug Approvals in Coming Years

Pharmaceutical Processing predicts the market for fibromyalgia drugs will grow to 1.9 billion dollars a year by the 2023. The basis for their predictions are the introduction of generics for currently approved FDA drugs for FM and the introduction of four “new” drugs; two of which are reformulations of older drugs. Please note that this is only a list of drugs and does not include other therapeutic approaches are being tested. It is also not a complete list of drugs being tested in FM. Nor does it include other drugs under development for other conditions that may be useful in fibromyalgia or ME/CFS.  Many of the drugs probably being used to treat fibromyalgia or ME/CFS are not FDA approved for those conditions. This is list of drugs that drug companies are willing to invest an enormous amount of money in in expectation they will be specifically approved for fibromyalgia. It’s a very specific list and does not reflect other treatment possibilities that will show up over time. Check out the four drugs currently in the FDA’s pipeline that Pharmaceutical Processing believes will be approved for FM over the next eight years.

“Reborn” – Reversing Fibromyalgia with Vagus Nerve Stimulation

The ‘vagus nerve’ is actually a bundle of different sized nerves. Aptly called the “wanderer”, the tenth and longest cranial nerve enters the brain at the medulla (Look up) and extends down into the chest cavity and into the abdomen.  Eighty percent of the nerve is devoted to relaying information from the body to the brain. The “wanderer” affects the function of every organ and the immune system The autonomic nervous system’s Yin to the sympathetic nervous system’s Yang, the vagus nerve regulates the parasympathetic nervous system.  It affects everything from the swallowing to digestion to speaking to blood pressure. Reduced heart rate variability (HRV) findings suggest an underactive vagus nerve may not be keeping the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight system) under control in chronic fatigue syndrome  (ME/CFS) and fibromyalgia (FM).  The consequences of that are unclear but reduced HRV has been associated with increased pain, cognitive problems and poor sleep in FM and ME/CFS.  Estrogen, interestingly, appears to accomplish it’s anti-pain functions  via the vagus nerve.

The Tests That Matter: A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Community Report

The goal of this Community Report is to compile of list of tests that matter. Not necessarily tests which have lead to a diagnosis but tests which have resulted in a treatment approach that has produced results – made you a bit (or a lot) healthier. If a test has revealed a diagnosis the doctor proceeds to treat you for and it’s been helpful then it fits. If a test reveals an abnormality the doctor has no treatment for – it doesn’t fit. The first part of the poll lists tests recommended by the IACFS/ME primer (Table II).  The second lists tests I’ve thought of. I’m sure I missed many. Please add tests that made a difference who are not shown in the “Other” box at the end of the poll.

Pyroluria – Real Disorder or Figment? A Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Inquiry

You can’t find it in WebMd. One website lists a good number of studies, few of which are found in PubMed. It’s called pyroluria. Opinions vary as to pyroluria’s status. It’s a  “fringe disorder” that has gotten little or no traction in traditional medical circles.  Is it real? Some scoff. Other orthomolecular doctors, nutritionists and alternative health practitioners believe it’s a real and underdiagnosed disorder.

But whether it's occasional forgetfulness or loss of short-term memory, one must be aware that there are specific factors that can cause it even at a young age instead of simply attributing memory loss to a natural decline in cognitive functioning. These causes include alcohol, drug or tobacco abuse, certain medications, sleeplessness, stress and depression, nutritional deficiency, head injury, stroke and dementia. Your Brain Loves Magnesium L-Threonate

Have you ever forgotten a word or someone’s name that you should know? It happens to all of us, but what if you frequently find that you have trouble with ‘word finding’ or you keep forgetting to pay bills or get lost easily?  Your kids will tell say you had a “brain fart” or “senior moment” but honestly, it’s nothing to kid about. Cooking, house work and daily self care skills start to decline. Next comes the conversation about senior living facilities, but wait, you are only 40 or 50 something! What’s going on?
Don’t be hard on yourself, keep in mind we live in an ‘information stimulation’ age. Watch the news for an hour, you’ll be so wired from all the sad stories ticking by you will notice the silence as soon as you shut off the TV.  Devices? Mmm, love ‘em and hate ‘em.  All these tweets, posts, emails and mental chatter allow for virtually no space between your own thoughts.

Understanding fibromyalgia: using twin studies to devise a diagnostic blood testfibromyalgia

What are the aims of this research? The aim of this study is to develop a diagnostic blood test by examining samples and measurements taken from 400 twin volunteers, in which one twin has fibromyalgia, to try to identify markers in their DNA that are associated with the disease. Why is this research important? Fibromyalgia is a long term painful condition which is poorly understood and difficult to manage. At present, treatment is limited and, in many cases, is unsatisfactory. Currently there is no blood test for fibromyalgia: this makes diagnosis difficult.

:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:

New blood test for fibromyalgia moves a step closer -

For years there was doubt among the medical profession whether fibromyalgia actually existed – except in the minds of patients.
There's still no specific blood test, scan or x-ray that can confirm a diagnosis, although blood tests are often carried out to rule out other conditions.
Now scientists at King’s College London, FUNDED by a three year grant of £171,000 from us, are hoping their latest research will lead to a reliable blood test to enable doctors to make a proper diagnosis.

Drive me Crazy

I hate driving! (Mind you, I also hate being a passenger with some people, too...but that’s another story!) Even in my cute little car. Driving can be a major stressor. And we are all very aware that stress is a common trigger of flare ups. As well as being stressful, driving requires you to sit and move in ways that can make your bits hurt more. Trains, buses and taxis may be options, but public transportation comes with its own stresses and is not always available or affordable. Many people with fibromyalgia cannot walk or bike very far without pain, and getting a ride is not always easy. As a result of all this, you may not be able to avoid driving, especially if you work. But, perhaps, there are a few things you can do to better cope with stressful driving situations.
Read on for The Risks of Driving with Fibromyalgia

Pam Stewart is going to be taking part in a walking marathon.

Pam is taking part in a challenging walking marathon on 21st June along the Thames path starting and returning to Windsor. The walk has been organised by The Street Children charity so they will benefit from the entrance fee but donations will go to FMA UK to continue work on getting fibromyalgia prioritised for research and better treatment options.
“It will help me on my way if I know each step is getting me closer to the finish and achieving a reasonable amount for a cause I believe in wholeheartedly.”
The text below is from the JustGiving page
“My husband had many years of suffering through this cruel disease and still people are going through the same agonies as he did many years later.  More people need to be aware of the problems fibromyalgia causes and the heartache it brings to families.
I do my best to convince politicians and medical professionals to make use of the known treatments that can be effective up to a point, but far more needs to be done if the suffering is to be truly relieved.
Any amount raised will be a help to FMA UK so that they can "fight for freedom from fibromyalgia" and perhaps the t-shirt on the walk will make more people aware as well.”
